Aircon Sweating or Dripping on the Surface?

In Singapore’s humid climate, aircon units can sometimes show signs of external condensation — often called “sweating.” While it might seem harmless, it signals a deeper imbalance between temperature, airflow, and insulation. Left unchecked, it can damage walls, wiring, and the unit itself.

Why Is My Aircon Sweating on the Outside?

1. Temperature difference too extreme

When the coil or casing gets too cold — and meets warm, humid room air — condensation forms outside the unit. Common in low-temp settings and small rooms.

2. Ducts or pipes poorly insulated

If cold lines are exposed or insulation is missing, condensation will form — especially around piping or trunking.

3. Drainage pipe is clogged

If water isn’t draining fast enough, it can back up and “sweat” around the tray, housing, or walls.

4. Cooling coil is dirty

A dusty coil reduces heat exchange, triggering moisture buildup that doesn’t drain properly — leading to visible sweating.

5. Room humidity too high

Even a working system may struggle to dehumidify if doors are open or moisture is constantly reintroduced (e.g. cooking, shower steam).

6. Thermostat set too low

Overcooling the room beyond what’s needed increases condensation risk — especially when fan speeds are low.

7. Installation gaps or poor sealing

Gaps between the backplate, trunking, or casings can let warm air leak in — feeding surface condensation.

What You Can Check First

  • Water forming on the unit — or leaking from inside?

  • Thermostat set below 20°C?

  • Any airflow blocked by curtains or furniture?

  • Drain pipe dripping steadily?

Surface moisture isn’t a cleaning issue. It’s a symptom — and it points to thermal or drainage imbalance.

Why It Matters

If ignored:

  • Condensation can drip onto electrical points or walls

  • Mold or paint damage may develop near the unit

  • Internal components may corrode from prolonged exposure

  • Energy efficiency drops, especially in ducted systems

Sweating means something’s off. Fix the cause — not just the symptom.

When to Book a Diagnostic

✅ Water forms on surface of indoor unit

✅ Dripping near trunking, insulation, or casing

✅ Drainage or coil already cleaned but sweating continues

✅ Room humidity feels high even with aircon on

We’ll inspect insulation, drainage, coil temp, and system balance to trace the root cause.
